HORENSTEIN, Dr. Simon 93, of St. Louis, died on June 17, 2018 after a long illness. Born September 8, 1924 to Isadore and Etta Horenstein, he grew up in Providence, Rhode Island, attending Classical High School and Brown College before military service and subsequent medical and neurological training in Chicago and Boston. He was a renowned neurologist, described by his colleagues as one of the great thinkers of neurology. His long career in academic medicine began at Harvard University, then Western Reserve University, concluding at Saint Louis University where he served as Professor and Founding Chairman of the Department of Neurology. Thereafter, he spent many years in private practice. He was a compassionate physician, making house calls well into his 80's for his "older" patients. Authoring numerous medical articles, colleagues commented that he wrote "beautiful medicine". He was the recipient of many academic awards, honors and prizes. A passionate flute player, he enjoyed playing in bands, concert bands, orchestras and wind groups, as well as writing extensive program notes.

He was the beloved husband of Ilene Horenstein and the late Mary Joan Gunville; dear father and father-in-law of Joshua (Janet) Horenstein, Deborah Elizabeth (late Kevin J.) Prendergast and Jonathan (Cynthia) Horenstein; dear grandfather of Tamara, Jennifer, Alexandra, Jonathan and Julia; dear great-grandfather of Lauren, Emma, Joshua Benjamin and Oliver; dear brother of the late Betty Pickett and late Sarah Schuman.
