Peer inside a heavy-metal fruit fly brain

Researchers captured high-resolution pictures of the fly brain with the help of high-speed electron microscopes.

The scientists infused heavy metals that seep into neuron membranes and synapses in adult fruit fly brains. Then, they hit sections of the brain with an electron beam — which passed through everything but the spots lined with heavy metals — and snapped pictures using custom microscopy systems.
