May 2019

Dear ANA members,

As fellow clinician-researchers, you know how many hats we wear to keep our research, educational duties, and practices moving forward. On any given day, we are physicians, researchers, administrators, program directors, mentors (and mentees), and lifelong students of neurology, all with the goal of improving patients’ lives and advancing our field.

While swapping these hats on and off can make for some long days, I have found this multifaceted profession to be deeply gratifying. With the depth and breadth of our charge as innovators in discovery, education and clinical care comes great potential for impact; we can see progress as a discipline that we are expanding our understanding of neurologic diseases and improving our ability to treat them.

Our unique career path also requires specialized resources and support. For 144 years, the American Neurological Association has been by the side of leading academic neurologists, evolving with the profession. I have leaned on the ANA throughout my career as a source for knowledge, collaboration, and professional development. I look forward to the Annual Meeting each year for the invigoration that comes with learning about the latest advances in the field among likeminded colleagues from around the world. And I find inspiration in being a member of an extensive network of peers tackling the same challenges as I am, with the same goals.

I encourage you to share the benefits of the ANA with your colleagues by bringing them into the fold as members. Our new membership toolkit makes it easy to introduce the breadth of ANA resources available to academic neurologists at all career stages. The kit includes a brochure outlining the advantages of becoming a member, a Top 10 Reasons to Join the ANA flier, video testimonials from early career members, and an email template so that all you need to do to spread the word about the ANA is copy and paste.

Also, don’t forget to register for the 2019 Annual Meeting, October 13-15 in St. Louis. It’s the highlight of the ANA calendar, and the best time for members both new and seasoned to connect over exciting science.

See you in St. Louis!

Warm regards,

David M. Holtzman, MD
