June 2019

Dear ANA members,

While our academic schedules often slow down a little over the summer, the ANA is hard at work preparing for our 144th Annual Meeting, October 13–15, 2019 (with a pre-meeting symposium on brain-computer interfaces October 12). We just received a large number of late-breaking abstracts and will be having our summer board meeting at the beginning of July. Please go ahead and register for ANA2019; if you do so by September 16, you can take advantage of early bird savings.

This year’s meeting plenary sessions are particularly exciting. Because it’s Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, this newsletter highlights our Presidential Symposium, “Dominantly Inherited and Late-Onset Alzheimer’s Disease: Genetics, Biomarkers, Timecourse, and Treatments.” Four internationally known scientists and physician scientists—Alison Goate, Gil Rabinovici, Randall Bateman, and Yakeel Quiroz—will describe how genetic and biomarker studies have led to the ability to understand novel disease mechanisms and detect the underlying pathology of Alzheimer’s disease as early as 20 years before symptom onset. Many of these advances have allowed for a comparison of similarities and differences between dominantly inherited and late-onset Alzheimer’s disease, and have set the stage for ongoing prevention trials in both forms of the disease. The findings presented will also provide important insights into other neurodegenerative diseases.

In addition to the scientific presentations, we are excited to hear from Alzheimer’s advocate Kim Campbell, widow of Grammy Hall of Fame & Award-winning musician Glen Campbell. Kim will highlight some of the events described in the 2014 award-winning American documentary film “Glenn Campbell: I’ll Be Me.” Campbell and close friend Julian Raymond (the film's executive producer) won a Grammy Award and an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song for writing the film's theme, "I'm Not Gonna Miss You."

I look forward to welcoming you to the Meeting and the Symposium, and I wish everyone a wonderful summer.

Warm Regards,
