President's Message August 2016

August 2016

Dear Members:

Your colleagues on the Scientific Program Advisory Committee and the Professional Development Committee have once again developed an absolutely outstanding and robust program for the 141st Annual Meeting of the American Neurological Association!

I encourage you to peruse the just released Advance Program and plan now to carve time out from your institutional responsibilities and journey to Baltimore in mid-October.  On Saturday evening, October 15, our gathering will commence with a dinner
and Pre-Meeting Symposium, The Neuroscience of Consciousness and Coma. This highly clinically relevant topic is one in which the scientific knowledge has been evolving in ways that challenge previous paradigms - it will be thought-provoking and informative. Seats are going fast for this session so register early if this piques your interest.

Beginning Sunday, October 16 - over a compact, 3-day period - the morning scientific plenary is preceded by parallel career development sessions, in different tracks that are tailored to the needs and interests of academic neurologists at junior and advanced academic stages. New this year will be a third parallel session on Sunday morning for fellows and residents. This session will feature several speakers presenting topics of interest to those envisioning a future career in academic neurology including one from our International Outreach Committee, who will focus on global neurology career opportunities.

Each day, morning and afternoon plenary symposia will bring together many of the world's leading neuroscientists from diverse fields including genetics, neurobiology, healthcare delivery and disparities research, neuro-immunology, and neurodegenerative diseases. The Derek Denny-Brown Symposium will highlight the outstanding science of next generation neurologist investigators.

Sunday Plenaries
Morning: Rethinking the Blood Brain Barrier: Brain Drains and Innate Immunity in Neurologic Disease
Afternoon: Derek Denny-Brown Young Neurological Scholar Symposium

Monday Plenaries
Morning: Beyond the Genome: Toward Precision Medicine in Neurology
Afternoon: Presidential Symposium: The Role of Academic Neurology in Improving Health

Tuesday Plenaries
Morning: The Social-Emotional Brain: From Neurobiology to Neurological Disease
Afternoon: Selective Neuronal Dysfunction and Degeneration

The Scientific Program Advisory Committee has crafted a new feature within this year's symposia: multiple, 'data blitz' presentations thematically linked to the symposium topic, and drawn from the strongest of an excellent and large pool of almost 500 submitted abstracts.

Attendees should also find a match for their interests among the 16 Special Interest Group sessions held on Sunday and Monday afternoons, and in the Interactive Lunch Workshops on every meeting day.

Finally, we anticipate a good deal of foot traffic at the poster sessions, where attendees will have a chance to speak one-on-one with presenters, while also enjoying the wine and light hors d'oeuvres. Several dozen ANA committee members will be canvassing the poster hall, assessing top posters for prizes each evening, as well.

Discounted registration fees are available through August 29, so this is an excellent time to make your plans. On behalf of the ANA Board and Executive Committee, we look forward to seeing you in Baltimore!

Sincerely,

Barbara G. Vickrey, M.D., M.P.H.
