This Week's ANA2021 SIG Series Sessions (11/29 - 12/3)

ANA2021 attendees: your registration includes complimentary access to the SIG Series – virtual presentations related to ANA's 18 Special Interest Groups – held throughout November and December. All SIG sessions take place virtually and are scheduled for 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM ET.

Join us this week for the following sessions:

  • Multiple Sclerosis Monday, November 29
    • Multiple Sclerosis (MS) has long been considered more aggressive in people who identify as Black or African Americans, and some studies have suggested Hispanic or Latinx people with MS may also have more active disease. However, there is increasing awareness that race is a social construct, making it important to more fully identify contributors to any differences in MS outcomes, as many may be modifiable. In this session, we will examine the state of the literature surrounding the course of MS in Black/African Americans and Hispanic/Latinx individuals. Speakers will discuss socioeconomic factors in their intersection with race and ethnicity and will discuss some of biological manifestations that may proximally contribute to greater disease severity in these populations.
  • Traumatic Brain Injury | Wednesday, December 1
    • This session will focus on micro-structural injury after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Not all injuries after TBI can be readily seen on conventional imaging techniques, prompting investigators to develop novel methods of injury detection from biomarkers to advanced imaging sequences. Topics will include micro-structural injury after concussion and disruption to the neurovascular unit after more severe trauma. Experts in the field will discuss emerging science, alongside the latest work from junior investigators.
  • Health Services Research | Friday, December 3
    • In this session we will discuss how the COVID-19 disruption of health care delivery has impacted the equity and quality of neurologic care. Speakers will cover the implications of the changes in routine inpatient and outpatient care, and subsequent significant growth of telehealth and digital health services from patient, caregiver, provider, and business perspectives. Speakers will also bring updates on best practices and assessments of quality and access to telehealth in both inpatient and outpatient spheres, and comment on the implication of the regulatory changes at the federal and state levels in response to COVID-19. Finally, we will uncover the most recent data on the growing disparities in health care from the impact of the pandemic and the digital health transformation. There will be a panel discussion on the obstacles to expanding health delivery systems due to the pandemic, and alternate approaches and delivery models to address these challenges.
