PURPOSE

The Distinguished Neurology Teacher Award was established to recognize outstanding accomplishments in teaching neurology students. The purpose is to encourage efforts to recognize and reward contributions by gifted and talented teachers in neurology.

Each Neurology Department in the U.S. and Canada is encouraged to nominate one individual from the entire field of neurology each year.  Past recipients may be found here.

Award Criteria

  • Nominees must be neurology faculty members in either a tenure or non-tenure track.
  • The nominee's educational accomplishments should be in the field of neurology.
  • The nominee should be actively teaching.
  • Nominees who have published in the field of medical education and whose educational materials have been adopted by other institutions will be given special consideration.
  • An institutional system for selecting candidates that provides for broad student participation and the peer judgment of faculty colleagues will be favored.

To submit a nomination for the Distinguished Neurology Teacher Award, please submit the following documentation using the following online form.

  • Nominee's CV and complete bibliography
  • Biography
  • Three (3) letters of support, 1 from each of the following people:
    • Former student or trainee no longer at the nominee's institution
    • Neurology program director or education chair at another institution
    • National or international colleague who has worked with the nominee in development or oversight of neurology curricula
  • Completed nomination form.

Details the committee will be looking for:

  • Undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate education (institutions, degree and year of graduation)
  • Past and present academic positions
  • Past and present administrative positions in medical schools with dates
  • Year and type of formal recognition for nominee’s neurology / neuroscience teaching (e.g. Teacher of the Year)
  • Years and type of new neurology / neuroscience teaching programs / courses developed by nominee (e.g., (e.g. basic neuroscience for residents, family medicine lecture series, etc.)
  • Year and type of neurology/neuroscience teaching material developed by nominee (e.g. web based programs, Continuum, interactive CD programs, interactive lumbar puncture models, etc)
  • Year and name of each neurology/neuroscience education leadership appointment (e.g. course director, education chair, etc.)
  • Year and type of each national or international neurology/neuroscience education oversight appointment of nominee (e.g. exam writing committee, RRC, ABPN)
  • Year and citation of each neurology/neuroscience education related publication authored by the nominee
  • Year and citation of each publication with a student, resident, or fellow as first author with the nominee as a senior author during the trainee’s training in neurology/neuroscience
  • Year and name of each educational neurology/neuroscience text written or edited by the nominee.
  • Year and name of each neurology/neuroscience student support group (e.g. SIGN group, interdepartmental journal club, etc.) the nominee has developed or overseen
  • Year and name of all national and international awards for neurology/neuroscience education the nominee has received.
  • Any teaching/mentoring/curriculum development activities not reflected in the responses to the questions above.

Prize 
The awardee will be recognized with a plaque and a prize of $1,000 at the ANA’s Annual Meeting. The 2018 ANA Annual Meeting will be held on October 21-23, 2018 in Atlanta, GA.
