June 2022

Dear ANA members:

Greetings! With summer officially upon us, we hope you are enjoying the weather and that the first half of the year has been fruitful. We are pleased to be able to share with you this month some very exciting news from the IDEAS committee. We also have announcements about this year’s Travel Awards, Dependent Care Travel Grants, and NINDS K awards. In addition, we have updates about some of the outstanding programming that will be available at this year’s Annual Meeting.

IDEAS News

We would like to congratulate Inclusion/Diversity/Equity/Anti-Racism/Social Justice (IDEAS) Task Force member Uma Menon, MD, MBA (HC), who has established a neurology residency training program at the Morehouse School of Medicine. The department’s residency program has been approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in June 2022 with a commendation for obtaining the approval with no citations.

“The growing shortage of neurologists disproportionately impacts minorities. By creating a neurology residency training program, we at Morehouse School of Medicine hope to improve the neurological health and well-being of underserved communities,” Dr. Menon said. “Only around 4.4 percent of all neurology residents are Black or African-American (AAMC, 2019–20), and through our program we hope to grow and support more minorities in neurology, as doctor-patient race concordance has been shown to improve outcomes and satisfaction (The Journal of Health and Social Behavior, Sept 2002).”

Awards Announcements

After receiving a wonderful selection of abstracts, we were pleased to be able to select 139 qualified candidates for Travel Awards, with the total award amount being $80,000. Recipients of Travel Awards are eligible to apply for Dependent Care Travel Grants, which are available this year for the first time. These grants of up to $500 provide assistance with costs associated with the care of dependent(s) while the recipients attend the Annual Meeting. The deadline to apply is July 11.

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) K awardees have been selected. These mentored research awardees will attend the ANA-NINDS Career Development Symposium, and several will present their research during the poster sessions at ANA2022. We were very impressed by the abstracts submitted by the 70 awardees, and we look forward to having them join us for the meeting.

Annual Meeting (October 22–25, 2022) Overview and Updates

As is our tradition, we invite international delegates to our meeting each year. For ANA2022, we are excited to announce that Dr. Jensen’s initiative is to focus on some of our sub-Saharan African colleagues. We are excited to welcome Melody T. Asukile, MMED Neurology (UCT), FC Neurol(SA)Angelina Kakooza, MB.Ch.B, MMed, PhD; and Fred Stephen Sarfo, MD, PhD. They will be involved in a number of activities during the meeting, including a Global Neurology Interactive Lunch Workshop on Monday, October 24, at 12 p.m.

This year’s meeting will also include a number of exciting plenary symposia. In the newsletter below, we are featuring an interview with Krishnankutty Sathian and Stefanie Geisler, who will be presenting Novel Perspectives on Neurodegeneration, a presentation examining cross-cutting mechanisms and approaches to neurodegenerative disease. We are also featuring an interview with Annapurna Poduri and Sattar Khoshkoo, who will be presenting Emerging Role of Somatic Mutations in Neurology, which will focus on somatic mutations across the lifespan.

ANA2022 will be here before you know it, so please remember to register online by September 16 to receive the early bird registration rate. ANA members also receive a discount on the registration fee, so be sure to renew your membership before you register.
