July 2022

Dear ANA members:

Greetings! We hope this update finds you well! As July comes to a close, it’s hard to believe that ANA2022 is just three months away. I am looking forward to being back in person and reconnecting with my friends and colleagues in Chicago this October and hope to see you there!

Please be sure to renew your ANA membership before registering for the Annual Meeting. This ensures that you receive the discounted registration rate, in addition to the many other membership benefits.

This year’s Annual Meeting (October 22-25) will be an immersive experience that you don’t want to miss! One of the highlights will surely be the Presidential Symposium: Neurologic Dark Matter: Exploring the Exposome that Drives Neurological Disorders. “It will be critically important to integrate environmental exposures and gene X environment effects into the studies to understand the etiology of neurological disease,” said session moderator Rick Woychik, PhD.

This presidential symposium will consist of five speakers sharing their latest research and insights on this important topic which was recently featured in the USA Today Neurology supplement. “The revolution in genetics has provided causative drivers for a host of neurologic disorders, but now we see where the ceiling lies and our ignorance of the nongenetic drivers looms large,” said Walter J. Koroshetz, MD who will serve as a moderator. This symposium will take place on Sunday, October 23 at 1:15 PM CDT.

Awards Update

The ANA recently announced the winners of 2022 Awards for Outstanding Accomplishments in Academic Neurology and Neuroscience. These awards will be presented at ANA2022. The full announcement can be found here. Congratulations to the recipients of these prestigious awards!

I’d also like to congratulate the recipients of the Derek Denny-Brown Young Neurological Scholar Awards, which are given annually to new ANA members who have achieved significant stature in neurological research, whose work shows promise, and who are expected to continue making major contributions to the field of neurology. This year’s winners are Gemma Carvill, PhD, Northwestern University; Sami Barmada, MD, PhD, University of Michigan; and Brian Edlow, MD, Massachusetts General Hospital. Congratulations to all!

I am pleased to announce the winners of the ANA IDEAS Junior Member Award! This year’s awardees are Dr. Deborah Rose, Resident, Duke University Medical Center; Dr. Ashley Madera, Resident, University of Colorado; and Dr. Anthony Linares, Fellow, UCLA. Congratulations to the recipients!

Call for Committee Members

The ANA has several committees that will have openings for new members in October. If you’re interested in being an active voice for the ANA, please click this link and indicate any committees for which you would like to be considered.

ANA Board of Directors Nominees

We are fortunate to have an excellent selection of nominees for the ANA Board of Directors. After much consideration the Nominating Committee has completed the review and nominated a selection of ANA members for Officer and Director positions. You can learn more about the candidates in this newsletter.

I encourage you to attend the Executive Session of Membership, held during the Annual Meeting, on Monday, October 24 from 10:45 AM - 11:45 AM, where the nominees will be presented. This is your opportunity to participate in the session and in voting, where the election of nominees will be determined by a simple majority of votes received.

Enjoy the rest of your summer and I hope to see you soon.
