President's Message February 2014

February, 2014

Dear Colleagues,

Our colleague, Dr. Walter Koroshetz, at the NINDS, has kindly called attention to new funding initiatives in the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI).  Many are potentially relevant to academic neurologists, as outlined here. Dr. Koroshetz notes that initial letters of intent are due March 7, 2014.

We have just returned from a very productive Board meeting in Dallas and are pleased to report that there are many improvements and changes to the ANA. The ANA has transitioned seamlessly to a new management firm last July. Beyond our new staff, we have also reviewed, edited and approved substantial changes to the ANA Bylaws. In addition we have added 28 new committee members.

Among the most important initiatives, the ANA is currently exploring long-term options for the housing and eventual digitization of the ANA archives. The ANA archives are quite extensive and represent one of the best collections of documents in American neurology. The archives are now nearly fully indexed; however, they need to be moved to a new space where they can grow and be transferred to a more durable and usable format. My hope is that the digitized archives will ultimately be available online as a public resource. As one component of the archives project, in the next few months, we hope to identify one or more colleagues who will write an updated history of the ANA.

Sincerely,

Robert H. Brown, Jr., D.Phil., M.D.
